Job Vacancy for a Harbour Master at the Port of Penryn and Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth

The Service & Team:

Cornwall Council’s Maritime Section is seeking to appoint a full-time Harbour Master for the Port of Penryn and Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth. This role presents an exciting opportunity to significantly contribute to the management and development of the community Port of Penryn and Falmouth’s historic pier.

The Role:

The Harbour Master will be responsible for the efficient and effective administration, operation, and control of the harbour, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, Council policies, and necessary commercial considerations.

Working Pattern:

Due to the seasonal nature of this role, the post holder will be required to assist in providing 7-day cover for the pier during the summer season. This includes working every other weekend from April to the end of October on a rota basis, with a maximum of 5 working days per week and some flexibility to meet service demands.

What you’ll need to succeed:

The ideal candidate will possess experience in the marine and/or port industry, along with a proven track record of working with customers and the public. Experience in managing marine-related assets is advantageous. Excellent IT skills, particularly proficiency in Excel and databases, are essential. This position also involves the line management of a Maritime Assistant, including task delegation based on service needs. The role requires collaboration with the Maritime team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the harbours.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a beautiful location, in a role that is both interesting and varied.  We anticipate the successful candidate will commence their role at the beginning of January 2025.
