Port of Truro Spring 2022 Update

Shipping movements

There have been no significant ship moves since the last update. We still have the old salvage tug ‘Gladiator’ in layup.

Cargo vessels to Lighterage Quay

The most recent vessel to load scrap from Truro was ‘Bon Vivant’. She loaded 1627 tonnes of scrap metal. The ship came to Truro in ballast from Drogheda in Ireland and sailed for Antwerp to discharge her cargo.

Training

A number of staff completed mandatory training including Climate Change awareness training as Cornwall Council moves towards its Net Zero target.

Bylaws and Regulations

The ports of Truro and Penryn are seeing a huge increase in paddle sport activity which is welcome. There are a number of safety concerns with this increase in activity particularly relating to the interaction with other craft.

Please keep well clear of the main channels when ships or other large vessels are moving in the ports. Ships with tugs assisting must be treated with extra caution as the activity generates significant wash which can easily capsize small craft that come too close.

‘Be seen at night’! All water users have an obligation to exhibit appropriate lights from dusk to dawn and in restricted visibility. There is no excuse with modern LED technology readily available, the use of head torches is recommended where lights cannot be attached to very small craft. Harbour staff have reported canoes, kayaks and SUPs afloat in the dark. If you cannot be seen you are putting yourself at serious risk of collision with powered craft.
